For example: if I want to buy a blu- ray or hd recorder and I want to transfer files from all of my dvds into one or two blu-ray dvds is there a machine that allows you to do that or do you do it on the computer

We were given a sony hd dvd recorder/player from my very generous grandparents, anyway, were confused, what is a hd dvd player, can we play blue ray dvds on it i dont understand ? i thought BLUERAY was so you can watch dvds in hd! will someone please explain
