I have a hi-def tv, hooked up to DTV satellite. I don’t want tivo because I don’t want to pay monthly programming fees. Right now, I don’t care about blu-ray or hd play back formats because I mainly want to record from tv, much like using an old vhs recorder. What machines are available, which do you recommend?

The best way to do this is to get a DVR from Direct tv.
You will have to pay for service from anyother DVR provider anyways. No other easy way around the monthly fee unless you are willing to create your own PVR with a PC using linux or Vista Media Center.
